Frequently Asked Questions About Flooring

showroomWhat is a good pad?
Carpet performs best when you pair it with the appropriate padding. We offer a premium pad with every carpet purchase, but pad requirements differ for every type of carpet. A pad that is too thick or soft can actually reduce the life of your carpet. For instance, if you were to purchase a plush carpet, we would recommend our 8lb, 7/16” Rebond pad. However, if purchasing a flatter carpet — like a lot of today’s patterned carpets — we would recommend our synthetic felt pad.

What is the difference between nylon,
wool, polyester and polypropylene carpeting?
The difference lies in the fiber. Wool is a natural fiber and considered the benchmark to which all other carpets are compared. It is naturally resilient, and among its many attributes, is its ability to help regulate indoor climate/humidity. Nylon, polyester and polypropylene are synthetic fibers with their own benefits. Nylon is the most durable of the synthetic carpets, polyester is known for its colorfastness andpolypropylene is very stain resistant. To determine which carpet is the best fit for you, consider what is important to you, such as stain resistance, wearability, and circumstances such as budget and traffic.

Helping a customerWhat is engineered wood and why/when would I need it?
Engineered wood was originally created to be laid over concrete — a thinner slice of hardwood is glued to several layers of plywood, with each layer of plywood perpendicular to the next. This type of application provides dimensional stability, because wood is a moisture-sensitive product and concrete is always emitting moisture. Engineered hardwood was created specifically for this application, but new applications are being explored, as it can often be nailed, floated or glued over wood subfloors as well.

What is the difference between porcelain and ceramic tile?
Porcelain and ceramic are both made from clay. The difference is that the clay used to make porcelain is finer and denser that that used to make ceramic tile. Porcelain is a more-durable, harder tile that can also be used for outside applications. For this reason it is a wise choice to use porcelain in high-traffic areas such as kitchens and entryways.

showroom viewWhat kind of warranty do you offer?
We go to great lengths to ensure we employ qualified, efficient and “more than capable” installers. But in addition, we offer a two-year warranty on carpet installation and a one-year warranty on installation for hard surface materials such as tile, hardwood, laminate and vinyl.

What floor products are best for someone with allergies?
There are several products that would be good for allergy sufferers. Cork is a great option, because it is non-static. This means that when you sweep it, the dust does not cling back to the floor, which is what occurs when you sweep hardwood. Wood is another fabulous product for those with allergies, because it is non-allergenic and does not promote the growth of dust mites or bacteria. Wool fibers are too long and too coarse to be inhaled and therefore do not affect asthma sufferers.

What types of floor products are “green”?
Green products are eco-friendly, which means they are good for the environment. We offer a variety of green products such as wool, cork, bamboo, linoleum, and synthetic carpet made from recycled materials. These products are renewable and help to ensure a healthy environment for future generations.

showroom viewHow are you different from a large chain store?
We are different from the large chain stores in many ways. We offer top-notch design assistance and one-on-one service. Since flooring is all we do, we can offer more of a selection to our customers.

When we quote you a price, it is for the complete job; there are no additional add-on or “hidden” fees. Also, we have great, highly qualified installers, people that have been with us for years, so we can deliver consistently high quality.

We are comparably priced, but offer you a lot more when it comes to the level of service we deliver.
